Set along the coast of Fujian and overlooking the Taiwan Straits, Pingtan is a fast-developing island hub for cross-Straits exchange and tourism, positioned as China's second International Tourism Island. The island is continuing to expand its cultural and tourism offerings with the completion of its first scent-themed museum.

The Fragrance Art Center, located on the ground floor of a perfume factory operated by Kourtisanes (Fujian) Biotechnology Co., Ltd., has recently been completed. Also known as a "scent museum," the facility combines ocean-inspired design with elements of French-style elegance, reflecting both Pingtan's island character and the refined aesthetics of perfumery.

The center features 10 themed exhibition zones, showcasing fragrance extraction, a global map of raw materials, and the full perfume-making process. Dedicated areas for fragrance testing and immersive scent experiences are also included.

"Through a combination of multimedia and physical displays, visitors can gain a thorough understanding of the history of perfume and experience the fusion of Eastern and Western scent cultures," said Xu Wangyong, chairman of the company.

Beyond traditional exhibits, the center offers a range of interactive experiences. At the perfume bar, visitors can create their own personalized fragrances under the guidance of professional perfumers, selecting top, middle and base notes to craft a unique scent.

A digital scent zone provides a multi-sensory experience integrating sight, smell and sound. By wearing a scent device around the neck, visitors can match fragrances with visual scenes on screen, such as forest or cocoa aromas, creating an immersive environment.

Xu said the center plans to launch a series of "island-inspired" signature fragrances that incorporate marine elements, aiming to develop a distinctive local fragrance brand. Regular events, including themed salons and international perfume tastings, will also be held to bring together perfumers and scholars from around the world to share insights and explore fragrance culture.
