Located off the coast of Fujian Province, Pingtan is steadily expanding its role as a major destination for sailing and wind-based water sports, supported by strong natural wind conditions and increasingly well-developed event infrastructure.

Over the past two weeks, the 2026 National Windsurfing Championships, National Kiteboarding Championships and National Wingfoil Championships have been held in Pingtan. More than 100 athletes from across the country gathered to compete, showcasing their skills across multiple disciplines.

The competitions also served as a key benchmark of the country's annual training progress in windsurfing, kiteboarding and wingfoil disciplines, while highlighting Pingtan's growing capacity to host premier sailing and wind sports events.

Strong winds create a natural competition venue

At Jinsha Beach, steady and powerful sea winds create ideal conditions for wind-based sports. For disciplines such as windsurfing and kiteboarding, consistent wind is a decisive factor for both training and competition.

Pingtan sits in the Taiwan Straits, where the funneling effect of the Straits produces persistent wind throughout the year. Monitoring data shows an average annual wind speed exceeding 8.4 meters per second, with more than 200 days annually experiencing winds above force 7.

These conditions have attracted multiple professional teams from across the country for year-round training and preparation. Hong Kong windsurfing coach Zheng Guohui, who has brought athletes to Pingtan for consecutive seasons, described the area as one of Asia's top destinations for wind sports.

"Every year we come here to train and learn from each other, including the national squad," he said.

Beyond strong winds, Pingtan's coastal geography further supports competition needs. Its long sandy beaches provide ample space for kite launching and landing, while the waters around the island include sheltered waters for beginners and more exposed areas with bigger waves and chop for advanced athletes, catering to all skill levels.

Tokyo Olympic windsurfing champion Lu Yunxiu also praised the venue conditions.

"The beach layout is ideal for sports events, safety systems are well established, and the waters are spacious with stable conditions," she said. "It is highly beneficial for athletes' training and performance development."

Expanding facilities support growing event ecosystem

Alongside its natural advantages, Pingtan has continued to strengthen its sports infrastructure.

The Pingtan International Sailing Training Base features a dining area, gym, sports rehabilitation facilities, meeting rooms and athlete support spaces, providing integrated services for teams during training and competition.

In addition, the Longwangtou Water Sports and Marine Rescue Center includes an event reception hall, a cultural exhibition area, training classrooms, equipment storage and maintenance zones, and a competition operations center.

These facilities support a full spectrum of activities, from training and study camps to national and international competitions, strengthening Pingtan's role as a multi-level water sports destination.

Wang Jiaxin, deputy secretary-general and competition department head of the Chinese Yachting Association, noted that Pingtan's wind conditions are on par with those at leading European sailing venues.

"Strong and stable wind resources allow athletes to fully demonstrate their performance levels," he said. "Pingtan has already successfully hosted international events such as the Wingfoil Racing World Cup, and its organizational capacity is well recognized within the industry. We look forward to more international competitions being held here."

From competition venue to sports tourism driver

Since hosting the Wingfoil Racing World Cup in 2024, Pingtan has continued to attract major domestic events, including national championships in windsurfing, kiteboarding and wingfoil disciplines.

With its expanding event calendar and improving infrastructure, the island is increasingly transforming competitive sports activity into broader tourism engagement and economic momentum, reinforcing its development as a coastal hub for sailing and wind sports.
