As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes the creative landscape, defining the legal boundaries of AI-assisted work has become a global priority. This pressing issue took center stage at the 2026 Pingtan-Taiwan Intellectual Property Exchange Event, held on July 16 in Pingtan, the closest place on the Chinese mainland to the island of Taiwan.

Under the theme "Smart Links Across the Straits, Securing the Future through IP," the forum convened policymakers, legal experts, tech pioneers, and cultural entrepreneurs from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to pave new pathways for IP integration and protection.

A major highlight of the event was the deep dive into the legal complexities of AI-generated content. Addressing the boundaries of copyright in the digital age, Wang Pai, secretary-general of the Fujian Patent Attorneys Association, presented a definitive framework for creators navigating AI tools.

"Whether it is AI-assisted music covers, graphic design, or technical creations, copyright eligibility hinges on substantial human intellectual input," Wang emphasized. "Creators should treat AI as a partner or a tool, not an employee. By providing precise, granular prompts and applying human aesthetic curation and modification, creators ensure the resulting work retains the human touch necessary for legal protection."

Beyond tech, the forum highlighted how robust IP strategies can revitalize traditional sectors and the cultural tourism market.

Jiang Baisong, vice-president of the Taiwan Association for Cross-Straits Travel, noted that fusing IP with tourism is now a mainstream global trend. He emphasized that building strong IP awareness among consumers and merchants through education and commercial practice is vital for sustaining Pingtan's burgeoning cultural and creative products.

The forum concluded with high-impact, actionable outcomes designed to institutionalize cross-Straits synergy. The Pingtan Research Institute of Xiamen University inked a strategic partnership with Huaxia Industry and Research Co., while official appointments were made for new cross-Straits IP liaisons.

By bridging the gap between cutting-edge AI legal frameworks and grassroots financing for the industry, the event underscored Pingtan's growing role as a crucial hub for cross-Straits innovation and collaborative growth.
